AlexanderPlatz, East Berlin

Alexanderplatz is a large public square and transport hub in the central Mitte district of Berlin. The square is named after the Russian Tsar Alexander I and is often referred to simply as Alex. With more than 360,000 visitors daily, Alexanderplatz is, according to one study, the most visited area of Berlin, Germany.

The Berliner Fernsehturm (Berlin Television Tower) is a television tower is located here. The tower was constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the government of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). It was intended to be both a symbol of Communist power and of the city. It remains a landmark today. With its height of 368 metres (including antenna) it is the tallest structure in Germany, and the third-tallest structure in the European Union.
