Carcassonne, a town in southern France’s Occitanie region, is famous for its hilltop medieval citadel, La Cité, with numerous watchtowers and double-walled fortifications. La Cité is the largest medieval city in Europe with its walls still intact. The first walls were built in Gallo-Roman times, with major additions made in the 13th and 14th centuries. The Château Comtal (Count’s Castle) is a 12th-century castle set within the Cité of Carcassonne.
